Fall is in the Air! August 26,2013

Hello everyone!

So its getting much colder here already!! ahhhh I am already pulling out the scarves and sweaters! I secretly LOVE the fall! don't tell anyone but I am sad to see the summer come to a close.  It was sooo nice teaching people in parks and being able to stay out until 9:29 before curfew to keep preaching the gospel! It starting to get darker here earlier and stay darker later so 6:30 is seeming a little earlier then usual:) 

Anyway this week was really great! as all weeks are now! for all of you who are reading this who are about to leave on missions or are on them... I promise it gets better! if your first transfer is really hard... like mine was.. I promise that this whole lifestyle becomes normal! And you WILL find so much happiness in the Lord's work if you put your heart and soul into it! Like the consecrated missionary talk... leave it all on the altar of sacrifice because there isn't a better feeling of satisfacation knowing that the Lord is pleased with your work! 

So my favorite ami moved back to Tence with her family which is like an hour bus ride away from here but they are moving to le Puy which will be way easier for us to continue to teach her and her family! Her family is sooo cool and when we gave her mom a book of mormon in lingala, (they are from the Congo) she started crying! it was the best thing ever! We are helping them move this week! They are coming to visit us by the way after the mission:) Nelly's (our ami) brother plays soccer so i told him to try out for Real salt lake and he can live with you big b:) haha But anyways she is doing really well and I am excited to keep helping her progress! 

Our focus this week was to pass tons of members and we did and it was sooo great! I think the members really like us here and trust us with their friends which is good now they just need to INVITE their friends:) so we can find our french family! Another miracle is that we found 4 more amis this week to teach. the only problem was that they are all african men and all africans love to talk about jesus, but they don't keep commitments and they are not the french family we are looking for... its weird we don't have the problem of no one to teach like other villes, but we have the problem of too many people to teach but we need people who are really committed... we taught 3 lessons on Saturday and all of them didn't go super well.  They happened which was good but our amis didn't seem engaged and the last lesson the lady was COMPLETELY drunk and was like offering us cigarettes and booze and we were like ok we are going to come back when you have sobered up a bit and were going to talk about the word of wisdom....sleep tight:) aha just kidding but really so that night sister bowman I could tell was thinking "ok so we meet crazies on the street... the only people who are interested are crazies or lazy people!"  So right before we  turned the lights off I was like Sister Bowman we are going to find someone who is normal, I promise you! Don't worry we are close I can feel it.... Voila... miracle! The next day at church we arrived at the chapel and elder faatomo said you have an ami waiting for you and I was like who? we had invited a ton of africans to church but sadly enough we kind of knew none of them would show.  And I saw this lady and I didn't remember ever talking to her and I said "hi you must have met another one of my colleagues but welcome to church!" and she said ya I did. she was really quiet and timid and then all of the sudden her face came to my mind and I remember contacting her on the road last transfer!! When we contacted her she started crying and telling us that she was about to give up all hope in God and we were like please don't! come to church! you will feel better there! just come to church! and we had soooo much faith that she was going to come and she never showed.... but now standing in front of me, here she was nearly a month later! and I was like I REMEMBER YOU! and she kinda had a look that said finally!;) haha and long story short she tried to find our church but she couldn't so she went and found it online and came!!!!! she is sooo elect! so she came for all 3 hours and just loved it! when she left she was like everything I heard today was exactly what I needed! i am going on vacation but I will see you in september! after church we were thinking what just happened??? It was the greatest tender mercy ever! And just helped regain my faith that God is REALLY preparing people! not when we want them but when they are ready! that afternoon we read the talk from Elder Anderson "Its a miracle" as a companionship and we were just bursting with spirit! Go read that talk it is amazing!!!! oh my gosh! 

The Lord is preparing people right now! it may take a few crazies to get to the elect but at the end of the day the homeless crazies need Jesus Christ too but the Lord will lead us to the people who really need our time.  And if we listen to Him we will find those people who will build up the kingdom of God on the earth! i know that with all my heart! so help those missionaries find the elect! because the elects come from you and miracle elects come from the street:)

 Its been a good week! My companion is the best thing that ever happened to me and I hope that I serve the rest of my mission with her! Next to my amazing family and boyfriend who I love dearly, she could be the greatest blessing in my life:) Appreciate the people around you and pray for those elect people who the Lord is preparing! Have an awesome week!

First real week back in St. Etienne... land of the vacationners... except no one vacations here they go elsewhere... like Lyon.  And if I get told one more time that someone can't make it to a rdv because they are in Lyon, I might ask for an emmergency transfer just for a couple of days:) haha This week was really awesome but really hard to teach people because its the last week of vacation or so we have been told. A LOT of our rdv's fell through this week; one of which was at the top of this huge hill... and we brought a member and we didn't know how to get there, so she hiked this huge hill with us only to get to her apt and have her not be there! i called her said hi we're here! and she said sorry i am in lyon... i thought, ummm thanks for the call this morning before we hiked up your huge hill to get here! Haha but seriously! one thing i might teach the french people is politness:) A call would have been nice! That was on saturday and after that a little girl in our ward got baptized and her mom had really thought it all out weeks in advance so the program was flawless and sooo spriitual! oh my goodness it was sooo great! She invited a lot of her friends so it was great to talk to them and get to know them! Hopefully we can find people from that! This week was also hard because we get a lot of people who want to talk to us.... surprisingly right now we don't have problems finding people but they turn out to be men who are interested in other things besides the gospel... :) lets just say we could have had all meals paid for this week!! Or we teach alot of africans who totally believe but don't understand the importance of our message because of language barriers, and because they are not super reliable and never do their commitments or they just fall through all the time.  But Nelly is still here and we have taught her a couple of times but she also doesn't understand the importance of the priestood yet.  She is like I have been baptized 3 times that is probably enough right? haha I said umm no:) haha just kidding but we are working on that right now! 

My companion is sooo awesome though! she keeps me so positive and she is so great at making bad situations funny and just brushing it off! she is an incredibly hard worker too! she is always like lets just port or contact for a minute before we go home I say ok lets do it! She is going to Valence tomorrow for an exchange and i am really sad about it! She is sooo great! 

On Thursday we were in Lyon for a zone conference and I got a bunch of mail! thanks so much for the cards that everyone sent for my birthday! I even got one from Joe... felt preeeetttty special:) but it was really great and then on the way home the zone leaders came back with us to do an exchange with the elders in St. Etienne! They came and helped us with Rzgar... our iraqi ami. It was CRAZY!! we sat down in this plaza thing and this muslim guy walked by and just started into religion and all this crazy stuff! I was having a hard time following what was going on because everyone was just contradicting each other and he was going off about how jesus was the son of mary and not God. I said well actually he is the son of both... but anyway the zone leaders after said we want you sisters to be very careful:) i am like don't worry we are. it was funny! (this is Sandy; not sure how i feel about this and her lack of real worry. goodness child!)

I received probably the best compliment i will ever receive on my whole mission at zone conference.  We were talking about overcoming adversity and hard times in the mission because with vacation time and stuff its really hard for all missionaries to keep their progressing amis progressing.  Its also hard to hang on to new ones because so many are here one day and not the next.  So our zone leader, Elder Peterson (who was Tyler Johnson's comp in the mtc!!!) shared a really special experience about working hard in a difficult ville and the blessings he saw from it.  Then the other zone leader, Elder McCarty who has been a ZL in lyon for a while, said I want to tell you about a ville kind of like that before a missionary came in and changed everything and that ville is st. etienne... and i sat there stunned? I thought really? St. etienne struggled? And then he said But then Sister Modersitzki came in full of faith and lit it on fire! That whole city has changed around because of her faith! i was like what???? i had noooo idea! Later that night he told me that he used to hate coming on exchanges here. Around 3 transfers ago, stuff had happened but that our last district leader wasn't told anything and neither were we and because of our fresh view of the area we just started to change everything! I was soooo flatttered! soooooorrrryyy had to brag for a second! i know I am not baptizing anyone right now butttt apparently i have lit this place on fire:)!!! What?? haha just kidding! but anyway!

that is a little tid bit for what happened this week! not a lot happened because everyone is gone including our members! so next week should be more exciting i hope! We're visitng a ton of members this week trying to get numbers and people from them that are french and reliable and that can support this ward really well! Pray that we can find a french family! That is our goal:)

Short and sweet for ya! August 12, 2013

Sorry I don't have anytime today! you are all so sweet that I had 45 emails this morning... you guys spoiled me on my birthday!  instead of printing them all off and forgetting how nice you all are, I tried to write back to as many of you as I could!! thank you so much for the nice notes! Got one from Marcus Phipps and I was feeling prrrriiiittttyy special after that! but seriously how nice!!

So I have my new blue!!! ahhhh oh my gosh! its crazy i still can't believe I am training! I spent the whole week in Lyon. There were a lot of missionaries that came in and it was just impossible to sort everything out that we needed to! I spent my birthday with sister stevens and sister richardson... it was the best birthday ever! i couldn't have asked for anything better! I ate at mcdonalds with all the trainers for my brithday... yum:) haha Not!  i ordered a big coca cola and it was sooo great but it had no ice... thanks french people:) haha gotta love the luke warm everything here haha then they all sang to me at McDonald's, it was great! then the next day I got my blue and I TOTALLY CALLED IT! The blues were practicing teaching the trainers and we didn't know who are blue was yet and Sister Bowman (my blue) taught me with her comp.  After Sister Vidal (another trainer and one of my favorite missionaries) was said that is your blue and i said ya i know! haha and it was! I have a video of me getting her but I might just have to send the SIM card home so you can all see it! it was hilarious! 

Then we killed time... literally chilled at the office... taught members and contacted for 2 days until her legality so we could go home! we got back to St. Etienne Friday night and there was a ball at the church so we helped the members set up for that!  The elders are white washing here which means both elders are brand new to the area! Elder faatoma is from tahaiti and speaks only french to us... and he is our district leader so its been quite the experience to explain how everything works here in french... haha so ya difficult but its fine my blue speaks french really well so we manage! she lived in the french house at BYU and went on study abroad to paris and had studied french forever! she seriously speaks perfectly! i said ok you teach me french and i will teach you how to be a missionary... maybe... i barely know what i am doing! but fake it until you make it right? haha i was freaking out before we got our blues.  Sister vidal was like you can do this!  i said how.... i don't speak french really, i barely know how this mission thing works and now I am responsible for someone else's well being! but it is crazy! ever since we got back to st. etienne its like the time just flies by because now not a single minute is taken up by thoughts of me.  I just think ok does she understand, does she get this, i wonder if she knows about this, lets try this, this will be good to learn.  I am just thinking of ways to make her feel comfortable and thinking of our amis also! its crazy! I finally feel comfortable in my own skin now.  Its such a good feeling! 

we also had a rdv (appointment) with louise... she is back from strausbourg but is leaving on tuesday to go back because she got engaged to the guy she went to see... she is a bit crazy! i have not lost faith in her but she is definitely a person we will have to treat more cautiously! we gave her another date for baptism and she is going to meet the missionaries up there! i am trying to get their number so i can call them and explain.  All of our amis are on vacation right now unfortunately so not a lot to report! nelly is still here and she is sooo great! she comes to EVERYTHING! she came to the ball with Frere Professo. I didn't even know... she called him and said, can you pick me up and so she showed up and i was like oh my gosh hi! haha she gets herself rides to church with the members, she is perfect! there is a temple trip in october and she asked, can i go to that? and i said after your baptized... haha sooo ya good things happening there! 

Sorry i have to go! love you all so much! it was a great birthday! and a good week! very glad to be back in st. etienne though! my city:) i feel kinda cool showing everyone else around:) haha love you all!! thanks again for your sweet notes to me! 

August 5th 2013 Yayaya for birthdays and transfers!!

So i am sure any of you that care are dying to know what is happening to me for this transfer..... wait for it... ok its pretty crazy... I AM STAYING!!!! yaaaaa but here is the crazy part.... i am training a brand new missionary! when president called i was literally like... wait for reals... and he said yes,you will be great! i said no i won't i don't speak french! ahaha so ya this is crazy! i am one of the 3 sisters of our age training... how did i get so lucky... if that is even the right word for it! haha i am freaking out! i literally don't know what i am going to do! i am going to ruin this poor girl's mission oh my goodness! pray for me please!!! anyway

THANK YOU SOOOO MUCH FOR ALL THE BIRTHDAY WISHES! you guys are sooo great and i got so many great gifts in the mail thank you! my amazing boyfriend got me the MOST BEAUTIFUL michael kors watch.... you guys i seriously don't know how he does it... he is soooooo good at picking out gifts! he is incredible! and he is just so thoughtful i was crying the whole time i read and opened his package... i cry all the time...you guys know that by now! haha and then my sweet family sent me clothes and perfume!!!! and nail polish i am wearing right now with my utah necklace! haha it was great! then beau's sweet family wrote me a super long note with a cute cute shirt! its my favorite color too so i am so excited for something new in the wardrobe! so thanks again everyone! my comp and i celebrated last night because she wanted to be there when i opened up my presents because it was SOOOO hard to wait until my birthday! she knew what beau got me and i kept saying just tell me! All she would say is your right he is perfect! she made me a microwave cake and she sang to me and we had mac and cheese for dinner it was great!!!

Now i am in Lyon and i get to spend my real birthday with my best friend in the world sister stevens! ahhhh i am so excited! i get to chill with her for the next couple of days until my blue (brand new missionary) gets here! and sister richardson is training too so i get to spend my birthday with her too! its going to be the best day of my mission probably because i will be with my two very best friends ever on the mission and we will be doing the work of the Lord! its going to be sooo great! 

last week was so sooo great but it kind of crept by because we were all so curious as to what was going to happen with transfers! sooo my companion, sister russell, is going to Gex and both of the elders are leaving so they are white washing st. etienne! i am the only one that is staying! we receive two new elders in st. etienne one of which is blue and the other elder will be done with his mission half way through the transfer. its really weird! our mission is sooo young! there are sooo many sisters that are finsihing their missions this transfer! They are all sooo incredible! BIG D (this is Sandy, big D is Beau's darling single cousin) hit them up! so that is what is happening! i called louise after transfer calls and told her i was staying and she said yes! i am sooo happy! Then she said are you crying? (because i cry all the time) and i said yes but with tears of joy! and she said good because i am coming back on your birthday!!!!!!!!!! Yes!!! and she told me that everytime she has been sad in strausborg she reads her BOM and she feels better! i thought ahhh your perfect... you're a fugitive but you're perfect!! i love her!! then we found this awesome girl from english class her name is nelly and she is from congo and she is golden! she bore her testimony yesterday! her first sunday coming to church and she bore her testimony! she is sooo great! she calls us her angels! then there is still max and he and nelly really hit it off:):) (i am match making on my mission!) I thought "it's  baptism and off to the temple for you two!" minus that max is still married but they are getting divorced... so we will take care of that first:) and then Michel Lim left on vacation yesterday but we were able to teach him 3 times last week and he is moving along sooo well! he showed us this really long video of his niece in cambodia getting married.... it was her wedding video! hahah sooo funny! we were like ya this is really cool... ok can we start the lesson now? hahah he loves everything about the gospel but he asked us what we are allowed to drink and eat and we told him a little bit and he said what about tea?? i can't drink my tea? haha were like well maybe... depends on the kind of tea... ya anyways that will be a fun lesson! 

We had a movie night at the church again on friday night and we watched 17 miralces and i sat in between nelly and max and they were both crying! ahhh it was sooo great! and max would like freak out when the wolves would come and said amen everytime someone said a prayer in the movie and was just sooo funny! i am sending pictures of them so don't worry! they are sooo great! our iraqi.... he is being difficult! he came to the movie night with two of his friends and after the movie he kept coming up to me and was like americans and iraqis they're in a war... i said yes... but i have nothing to do with it! Then max came up and was said no no man! that is for the political people! we just be living in france and living our lives! haha said in the best african accent ever! he totally takes care of us sisters he is soo great! he calls us his angels too! he had some really hard questions about the plan of salvation this week and our lessons are in english so i feel even worse when i can't answer a question because its my native tongue... so we told him we would study the questions and find the answers if he would do the same! and the next lesson we started talking about it and he said i read your pamphlet and i think i found one of the answers! we said GOOD! haha it was sooo great! I love when investigators teach themselves... but the craziest thing happened! sooo we're teaching max and this women comes up to us that we met streetboarding one time. she said oh the two american girls! we said yes hello! She said my daughter is home with a headache but i will tell her you say hi! we said ok great! so then we keep teaching and she comes back down to the plaza with her daughter and said what are you doing?!? we said teaching... have a seat! haha so they sit down! we flip our lesson back into french and max starts teaching them the retab because his french is really good..........our amis was teaching our other amis the retab! it was crazy!! and he said you can know if its true if you read this book! hahah we said yes and i testify that what he said was true in the name of jesus christ amen!

then there was another lady we met streetboarding... she has a cool story but i don't have time to tell you but it was a miracle that we found her again! she passed by and said you still haven't brought me that book in vietnamese! and we said your address was faux (wrong or twisted) and she said oh shoot and gave us her correct address and then said what are you doing... we said teaching have a seat! hahah you guys... we were literally teaching multitudes of people in this plaza... well max was teaching the multitude! it was crazy!!! we left that lesson and we said to each other, what just happened??? ohhhh for the record, this lady and her daughter are in a really weird situation right now. i don't know what is going on but they are really timid and can't set up times to meet with us because of something i don't know? but max said i am sorry madame. may we pray with you to bless you with you struggles in life before you head in? and she said, yes of course! so max said the prayer and it was BEAUTIFUL! oh my gosh! it was amazing!!! anyway, sister russell was like that is not far you get to stay here!!... i said yes it is! i have to train! but really i am sooo lucky!! i am sooo happy to be staying here! there are way tooo many people that are getting baptized next month! I just know it! seriously i am predicting 4 people maybe within the next couple of months! its so hard right now because its vacation time for the french! anyways! i love being a missionary! i live in the most muslim town and the work is crazy here! the lord works in mysterious ways!

I know this is long but i hope ally gets a chance to read this: ally you will have a really hard mission... europe is hard! bulgaria is going to be harder than france! but the work is hastening... missionaries are no longer in europe to plant seeds! we are here to harvest! i heard something really cool! People in europe meet the missionaries an average of 7 times before they get baptized! so when people say no i think, ok maybe i am the 6th time:) but because of that every baptism you get means that 6 times the missionaries before that thought they had failed... if that makes sense! so never think you have failed if your not getting baptisms or the work isn't going anywhere according to you! if you work hard and are obedient you WILL see the fruits of your labors i promise you that! learn all you can for the next 2 weeks ally cat! you can do it! i have all the faith in the world in you! LOVE YOU FAMILY AND FRIENDS! i am going to drink a big DIET COKE tomorrow on my birthday because i am legal age to drink:) hhaha! thanks again for the the sweet thoughts and gifts!

Last week of transfer!! July 29th 2013

I can't believe its been an entire transfer! holy cow time is FLYING by! I thought it went fast last transfer but this one went faster! i heard after 6 months transfers go by like days! I think the hardest part of transfers for me are the middle week! Because you still have half a transfer and if things aren't going well your like "Can I do this for another 3 weeks... can I do this for another 15 months?" haha but you can and you get over it:)

So this week has been INCREDIBLE!!! We taught 4 lessons last tuesday... 4! we got 6 new amis last week! It was crazy! Oma must have been muttering sweet german nothings to these french people because I know there were tons of angels working with us this week!!! So we found this guy last P day on our way home and he is from Iraq and was wanting to talk about the war and stuff. He said, "why did you start the war?" but he said it nicely and jokingly in english... he loves to speak english even though he doesn't speak super well.  And I said, "ummm I think you started the war actually, remember 9/11?"  But then I wondered ... no you probably don't even know what happened in new york because you had a dictator that kept every ounce of your freedom!! But he lost his entire family in the war and is here as a refugee! he lived in paris for 4 years and now he is here. I think he thought our first rdv was to talk culture and stuff but we whipped out a book of mormon in arabic and he was like wooooww! So ya we taught him a couple of times last week.  Its hard with him though because he is muslim... so trying to teach the gospel of jesus christ is hard because he doesn't believe in christ... haha poses some problems! He is still a practicing muslim but he can totally change because he has no ties to home and he is never going back... so pray really really hard for him! Then we met this guy max from nigeria a couple of weeks ago and we have last minute lessons with him all the time. he is SOOOOO FUNNY! oh my goodness! He speaks english so its really weird to do our lessons in english because I am not used to it.  But we gave him an english book of mormon to replace his french one and he was like "WOW this one is way smaller! way more portable why do they make the french ones so big?" haha i was like because half of the french words aren't pronounced which means lots of wasted letters":) We were on exchanges this week and I was wither Sister Stevens:) my best friend in the whole world apart from sister richardson on the mission! it was the best day of my mission! haha she is soooo great! but we went sooo hard all day! all day! Poor girl she was like when do you eat dinner I was said we usually don't... haha its true what beau said...the harder you work the faster the time goes and the easier your mission is so we don't stop all day! so we were on our way back to have dinner 30 minutes before we were supposed to plan for the end of the night and max called and was said i am sorry i cancelled but i can meet you at your place right now! haha thankfully we live right next to this park thing so we could meet him there.  But we had JUST sat down to eat.. and I said will you do this lesson please? haha she said, ya for sure! So we went and taught him at 9 at night! you have to be in by 9:30 and sister stevens said this has to be quick we have to be in by 9:30! i said ok ok we will! So we teach him about joseph smith he loves it he says the closing prayer which was like the best prayer i have ever heard! and at 9:29 we are sprinting back to our apartment! haha we laid down for bed that night and she was like you are one of the hardest working missionaries i have ever seen! she is like most missionaries would have said no to that lesson but there we were leaving our dinner to go teach! it was a good feeling to know that i am doing something right since we are teaching ourselves what is good and what is not! haha 

Then we had district meeting on thursday which is always sooo good and always pumps me up soooo much! And we went out and contacted about our english class next week and SOOOO many people are interested! we are hoping that it will be huge and that we can find lots of people from that! we contacted for 3 hours! i was soooo dead! we went and dropped off our streetboard at our DMP's (ward mission leader) and he invited us to come in and drink something he said you two look deranged! haha i said we would love to but can't its against the rules" and so he brought two chairs outside and some juice and glasses and had us tell him about the people we found! he is the nicest guy in the world oh my goodness.  He then bore his testimony on sunday about how our examples of obedience, even in times that seem harmless, was inspiring for him.  We had a lot of people building us up this week:) which i needed after last week! haha 

Then we met Lim... I have been forcing myself to contact people on the tram because its the most awkward contact but we're on them all the time and its a waste of time if your not talking to people! so i talked to him and he is from cambodia and he got separated from his family during some war or something|?  his mom went around with his picture around the country looking for him.  He prayed every night he would find his family and they FOUND EACH OTHER! can you believe that?? crazy! and because of that he now believes in God! he gave me all his info on the tram and then we got off at our stop. We went to our apartment and I said to Soeur Russell, we have to go work some more we can't be done for the night.  So we went back out to work and caught him coming home from grocery shopping. we said can we teach you right now? haha and he said yes! so we taught him and he is soooo cool! i have such a good feeling about him! we have a cambodian book of mormon that he is going to love when we see him tomorrow! 

Those are just a few of the miracles we have seen this week! there were sooo many more but it would take forever! We will see how many of these new amis give us more rdv's this week and then hopefully I will have more stories for you next week! Your prayers are being answereed... mine are being answered... we now have too many people to teach we can't fit them all into a week.  My planner is chuck full of numbers and addresses! the Lord has blessed us SOOOO MUCH! beyond what I would have ever imagined! i am curious to see what happens this week with transfers because I feel like I am leaving but I felt like I was staying last time so we will see:) haha thanks for all the birthday packages so far... well thank you burningham's:) haha you guys are sooo great! love you all! Remember to always put your faith in the Lord no matter what! he wants to help you so much but you have to believe that He can! I love all of the stories of Jesus in the bible as He heals people according to their faith! I was lacking faith at the beginning of this transfer but as soon as I trusted that on His timing, we would find work we found SO MUCH! Louise calls me everyday and she is doing well. she is sad and wants to come home so she is trying to this week:) I am pumped! anyways this is sooo long! love you all!

We had exchanges this week and Sister Stevens came to st etienne and we had a whole day together it was sooooo great! oh my goodness we had way too much fun together! Then we had district meeting the next day so we had a sleepover:)
